Chemoreceptor Organs Flashcards
what do the chemoreceptor organs do?
- sense changes in blood CO2, O2 tension, pH
- regulate respiration and circulation
what are the two most important chemoreceptor organs?
aortic body (base of heart)
carotid body (bifurcation of the common carotid artery)
we only need to know some neoplasms of the chemoreceptor organs
what is a chemodectoma?
a paraganglioma made of chemoreceptor cells
(paragangliomas are neoplasms of chromatffin cells, a type of nerve cell)
which chemoreceptor organ gets chemodectomas more?
aortic body > carotid body
Chemodectomas can be benign and malignant. tell me the aortic body gets which one more commonly? what about the carotid body?
aortic: adenoma > carcinoma
carotid: carcinoma > adenoma
chemodectomas are most common in what species/signalment?
brachycephalic dog breeds
what is the significance of chemodectomas?
not functional, but space occupying, so could impact surrounding organs (like the heart oof ow ouchie that ones bad)
what dis
malignant chemodectoma of the aortic body
what dis?
malignant chemodectoma of the aortic body
