Chemistry Of Bio Flashcards
What is cellulose?
A branched polymer
How many amino acids are there?
20
What are the components of an amino acid?
Carboxyl group, amino group, H, and R group
What is each unit of a polypeptide called?
Residue
What is the primary structure of a protein?
Just the order of amino acids
What is the secondary structure of a protein?
How the peptide chain is coiled/folded
What are the 3 secondary structures?
Alpha helix, beta sheet, and disulfide bonds
What direction do R groups point in alpha helixes?
Outwards
What direction do beta sheets run?
Anti parallel
What direction do R-groups stick out in a beta sheet?
They point in and out alternatingly
What is the tertiary structure of a protein?
The 3-D shape it takes on which occur through tons of different forces
What is the quaternary structure of a protein?
The overall protein structure of multiple polypeptides put together
