chemistry chapter 7 Flashcards
what is electrolysis
electrolysis is the decomposition of an ionic compound, when molten or in aqueous solution by the passage of an electric current. it can also breakdown a covalent compound such as water using electricity
what takes place in the electrolyte cell
electrolysis is important for extracting pure elements from compounds. it takes place in an electrolyte cell
why is water a poor conductor
Water is very poor conductor because it is a covalent compound and only minute
amounts of it ionises to form hydrogen and hydroxide ions, so water it is not an
effective electrolyte
what are the parts of an electrolytic cell
the electrolytic cell works like like an electrical circuit and has these main components - a battery electrolyte and an electrodes
What makes up a circuit in cells – batteries or electrolysis
- All metals, non–metal carbon. This conduction involves the movement of free or delocalised electrons.
- Any compound, molten or dissolved in solution, in which the liquid contains free
moving ions is called an electrolyte and can conduct an electrical current.
how does electrolysis work in the external circuit
during electrolysis, electrons flow from the positive terminal to the negative terminal of the battery
how does electrolysis work at the anode
- anions move to the anode
- anions lose electrons at the anode
- oxidation occurs at the anode
how does electrolysis work at the cathode
- cations move to the cathode
- cations gain electrons at the cathode
- reduction occurs at the cathode
what happens to the ions at the electrodes
- cations (positive ions) gain electrons at the negatively charged cathode. this is reduction.
- anions (negative ions) lose electrons at the positively charged anode. this is oxidation
how does electrolysis work within the electrolyte
during electrolysis, the flow of the ions towards the electrodes causes the flow of electric current through the electrolyte
what stands for OIL RIG
OIL- Oxidation Is Loss of electrons
RIG- Reduction Is Gain of electrons
what is a binary compound
a binary compound containing only two elements, usually a metal cation, and a non metal anion
what is an example of the electrolysis of molten ionic compounds
electrolysis of molten lead bromide
what happens during electrolysis of molten lead bromide
