Chem - States Of Matter, Mixtures And Seperation Flashcards
What does the energy needed to change state of matter depend on?
The strength of the of the forces between the particles of the substance
What does a stronger force between particle result in?
A higher melting and boiling point
What are the limitations of the simple diagrams of solids liquids and gasses
There are no forces and that atoms are represented by solid spheres
What is a pure substance?
A single element or compound not mixed with any other substance
How do you distinguish pure from impure substances
They have different melting and boiling points eg. Salty water
What is a mixture?
A mixture of two or more elements or compounds not chemically combined
What is a formulation?
A mixture which has been designed as a useful product
What are some examples of formulations?
Fuels, cleaning agents and paints
How do you calculate Rf value in chromatography?
Rf = distance moved by substance/distance moved by solvent
How does chromatography separate mixtures ?
Different substances within a mixture have different Rf values and so will travel different distances
