Bio - Sexual And Asexual Reproduction Flashcards
What are sex gametes?
Specialised cells designed for reproduction
What is the main difference between asexual and sexual reproduction
Asexual only requires one parents whereas sexual requires two
Is there genetic variation in asexual reproduction?
No there are two copies of the same genes
Where does the fusion of gametes take place
In sexual reproduction
What do fused male and female gametes produce
A fertilised egg otherwise known as a zygote
What are some advantages to sexual reproduction?
- Variation in genetics gives a survival advantage if the environment changes by natural selection
- Natural selection can be sped up by selective breeding
What are advantages to asexual reproduction?
Time and energy is not wasted trying to find a mate
What does haploid mean?
Having a single set of unpaired chromosomes in a nucleus
What does diploid mean
A cell that contains two copies of each chromosome
