Chem - Atmosphere And Gasses Flashcards
What formed the early atmosphere?
Volcanic activity
How did the oceans form?
Water vapour condensed into water
Was there much oxygen in the early atmosphere?
No - oxygen is formed through photosynthesis and there were no plants
The atmosphere was mainly carbon dioxide at this point
Where does nitrogen come from?
Volcanic activity
Why did the amount of carbon dioxide dramatically decrease?
Photosynthesis and dissolving in the ocean
What percentage of nitrogen is the air
80%
What percentage of oxygen is in the air?
20%
What other gasses make up a small proportion of the atmosphere?
Carbon dioxide, water vapour and Nobel gasses
What is the test for hydrogen?
A burning splint held at the open end of a test tube. Hydrogen burns rapidly with a pop sound
What is the text for oxygen?
Insert a glowing splint into a test tube of gas, the splint relights in oxygen
What is the test for carbon dioxide?
Bubble the grass though limewater, if it turns cloudy it’s carbon dioxide
What is the test for chlorine ?
When damp litmus paper is put into chlorine gas, the paper is bleached and turns white
