Social Statuses
Perceived positions in society that are used to classify individuals
Ascribed Status
Given involuntarily,usually at birth
Achieved Status
Gained as a result of one’s efforts or choices
Master Status
Most identified status
Pigeonholing
May view individuals only through lens of their master status
Role performance
Carrying out of behaviors associated with a given role
Role partner
Person with whom one is interacting
Role set
Various roles associated with a status
Role Conflict
Difficulty in satisfying multiple requirements of the multiple roles
Role Strain
Difficulty in satisfying multiple requirements of the same role
Role Exit
Dropping of one identity for another
In-Group
Social group with which a person experiences a sense of belonging or identified as a member
Out-Group
Social group with which a person does not identify
Primary Group
Interactions between members of the group are direct, with close bonds providing earm, personal, and intimate relationships to members
Secondary Group
Interactions are impersonal and business-like with few emotional bonds and with the goal of accomplishing a specific purpose
