Achieved Status
Gained as a result of one’s efforts or choices
Master Status
Most identified status

May view individuals only through lens of their master status
Role performance
Carrying out of behaviors associated with a given role
Role set
Various roles associated with a status
Role Conflict
Difficulty in satisfying multiple requirements of the multiple roles
Role Strain
Difficulty in satisfying multiple requirements of the same role
In-Group
Social group with which a person experiences a sense of belonging or identified as a member
Out-Group
Social group with which a person does not identify
Primary Group
Interactions between members of the group are direct, with close bonds providing earm, personal, and intimate relationships to members
Secondary Group
Interactions are impersonal and business-like with few emotional bonds and with the goal of accomplishing a specific purpose
Gemeinschaft
Groups unified by feelings of togetherness due to shared beliefs, ancestry, or geography
Gesellschaft
Less personal groups that are formed out of mutual self-interests working together toward the same goal

Technique for observing, classifying, and measuring the interactions within small groups
System for Multiple Level Observation of Groups (SYMLOG)
Belief that there are 3 fundamental dimensions of interactions
- Dominance vs submission
- Friendliness vs unfriendliness
- Instrumentally controlled vs emotionally expressive
Network Redundancy
Overlapping connections with the same individual

Democratic or bureaucratic systems naturally shift to being ruled by an elite group
McDonaldization
Shift in focus toward efficiency, predictability, calculability, and control in societal practices
Appraisal Model
There are biologically predetermined expressions once an emotion is experiences, but there is a cognitive antecedent
Social Construction Model
There is no biological basis for emotions; emotions based on experiences and situational context
