Chapter 9 - Male Reproductive System Flashcards
How many sperm cells are released during single ejaculation?
Approx. 300 million but only one can penetrate a single ovum and fertilize it
Male gonads are the testes/testicles. Where do they develop and then relocate?
They develop in abdomen around the same level as the kidneys, then descend during embryonic development into the scrotum
What is a the scrotum?
A sac enclosing the testes on the outside of the body, lying between the thighs. It exposes the testes to a lower temperature than rest of body. Lower temp. is necessary for adequate maturation and development of sperm
Where is the perineum?
Located between the anus and scrotum, at the flood of pelvic cavity in male
What are the seminiferous tubules?
They contain cells that manufacture sperm
What do the interstitial cells do?
They manufacture an important male hormone, testosterone
After formation, sperm cells move through the seminiferous tubules and collect in ducts that lead to a large tube, the epididymis. What happens in the epididymis?
It’s at upper part of each testis. The sperm mature, become motile in epididymis, and are temporarily stored there
What is the vas deferens?
2 feet long and carries speed up into the pelvic region, at level of urinary bladder, merging with ducts from seminal vesicles for form the ejaculatory duct leading toward urethra.
How does the urologist perform a vasectomy or sterilization?
They cuts and ties off each vas deferens by making an incision in the scrotum
What is semen made up of?
A combination of fluid (seminal fluid) and spend
Where is the prostate gland?
Lies at region where bad deferens enters urethra, almost encircling the upper end of urethra.
Urethra passes through the penis to the outside of the body. What is the penis made up of?
Composed of erectile tissue and at its tip expands to form a soft, sensitive region called the gland penis
What is cryptorchidism; cryptorchism?
Undescended testicles
Orchiopexy is performed to bring tested into scrotum
What is hydrocele?
Sac of clear fluid in the scrotum
What is being prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)?
Benign growth of cells within prostate gland
