Chapter 7 - Urinary System Flashcards
How do the kidneys produce urine?
By filtration
What is the process of reabsorption?
Ensures that body retains essential substances like sugar, water, and sodium while allowing waste products to be excreted in urine. Final process in formation of urine is secretion
What is a nephron?
A combination of a glomerulus and a renal tubule. Each kidney contains about 1 million nephrons
What is nephrolithiasis?
Kidney stones (Rena calculi)
What is pyelonephritis?
Inflammation of lining of renal pelvis and renal parenchyma
What is diabetes insipidus (DI)?
Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) is not secreted, or there is a resistance of kidney to ADH
In DI, kidney produces large amounts of dilute Rhine. Lack of ADH prevents water from being reabsorbed into blood through renal tubules
What is diabetes mellitus (DM)?
Insulin is not secreted adequately or tissues are resistant to its effects
Major S+S are glycosuria, hyperglycaemia, polyuria, and polydipsia
What is blood urea nitrogen (BUN)?
Measurement of urea levels in blood
What is KUB (kidneys, ureters, and bladder)?
X-ray examination (without contrast) of kidneys, ureters, and bladder
What is a cystoscope?
Direct visualization of urethra and urinary bladder with an endoscope
What is a urinary catheterization?
Passage of a flexible, tubular instrument through urethra into the urinary bladder
