Chapter 7 - Vocabulary Flashcards
Arteriole
Small artery
Creatinine
Nitrogenous waste excreted in urine
Electrolyte
Chemical element that carries an electrical charge when dissolved in water. Electrolytes are necessary for functioning of muscles and nerves
Potassium and sodium are electrolytes
Filtration
Process whereby some substances, but not all, pass through a filter
Hilum
Depression in an organ where blood vessels and nerves enter and leave
Kidney
Bean shaped organs in either side of backbone in lumbar region; it filters nitrogenous wastes from bloodstream to form urine
Meatus
Opening or canal
Nephron
It is functional unit of kidney, each capable of forming urine by itself
Nitrogenous waste
Substance containing nitrogen and excreted in urine. Ex. Creatinine
Potassium (K+)
Electrolyte. Regulated by kidney so that a proper concentration is maintained within blood
Reabsorption
Process whereby renal tubules return materials necessary to body back into bloodstream
Renal pelvis
Central collecting region in kidney
Sodium (Na+)
Electrolyte. Regulated in blood and urine by kidneys; needed for proper transmission of nerve impulses, heart activity, and other metabolic functions.
Trigone
Triangular area in urinary bladder
Urea
Major nitrogenous waste excreted in urine
Ureter
One of two tubes leading from kidneys to urinary bladder
Urethra
Tube leading from urinary bladder to outside of body
Urinary bladder
Hollow, muscular sac that holds and stores urine
Urination (voiding)
Process of expelling urine
ADH
Antidiuretic hormone
BUN
Blood urea nitrogen
Cl-
Chloride- an electrolyte excreted by kidney
C&S
Culture and sensitive testing - to determine antibiotic effectiveness against bacteria grown from a patient’s urine specimen
K+
Potassium - an electrolyte
KUB
Kidney, ureter, and bladder
Na+
Sodium - an electrolyte
UA
Urinalysis
UTI
Urinary tract infection
