Chapter 11 - Vocabulary Flashcards
What is the aorta?
Largest artery in body
What is the apex of the heart?
Lower tip of heart
What is an arteriole?
Small artery
What is an artery?
Largest type of blood vessel; carries blood away from heart to all parts of body.
What is atrioventricular bundle or bundle of His?
Specialized muscle fibres connecting the atria with the ventricles and transmitting electrical impulses between them
What is atrioventricular node (AV node)?
Specialized tissue in the wall between the atria. Electrical impulses pass from pacemaker (SA node) through AV node and the bundle of His toward ventricles
What is the atrium (sin. Atria)?
On of two upper chambers of the heart
What is a capillary?
Smallest blood vessel. Materials pass to and from the bloodstream through thin capillary walls
What is CO2?
Gas (waste) released by body cells, transported via veins to the heart, and then to the lungs for exhalation
What are coronary arteries?
Blood vessels that branch from aorta and carry oxygenated blood to heart muscle
What is diastole?
Relaxation phase of the heart
What is EKG?
Record of the electricity flowing through the heart. Represented by waves of deflections called P, QRS, T
What is endocardium?
Inner lining of the heart
What is endothelium?
Innermost lining of blood vessels
What is the mitral valve?
Valve between the left atrium and left ventricle; bicuspid valve
What is the myocardium?
Muscular, middle layer of heart
What is normal sinus rhythm?
Heart rhythm originating in SA node with rest rate of 60-100 beats per min
What is oxygen?
Gas that enters the blood through the lungs and travels to the heart to be pumped via arteries to all body cells
What is the pacemaker, or SA node?
Specialized nervous tissue in right atrium that begins the heartbeat.
What is the pericardium?
Double-layered membrane surrounding the heart
