Chapter 9 - Male Reproductive System Flashcards
What are the bulbourethral glands? What do they do?
Pair of exocrine glands near male urethra.
- secrete fluid into urethra. Aka; Cowper glands
What is ejaculation?
Ejection of sperm + fluid from male urethra.
What is the ejaculatory duct?
Tube through which semen enters urethra.
What is the epididymus?
One of a pair of long tightly coiled tubes above each testis.
Store and carries sperm from seminiferous tubules to vas deferns.
What is erectile dysfunction?
Inability of an adult male to achieve an erection; impotence
What is the flagellum?
Hair-like projection on sperm, make it motile (able to move).
Tail.
What are fraternal twins?
2 infants resulting from fertilization of 2 separate ova by 2 desperate sperm.
What is the gland penis?
Sensitive tip of penis; comparable to clitoris.
What are identical twins?
2 infants resulting from division of 1 fertilized egg into 2 embryos.
1 egg/1 sperm/1 placenta/2 amniotic sacs (egg splits)
What are interstitial cells?
(Cells of testes)
- specialized cells, lie adjacent to seminiferous tubules in testes.
Produce testosterone. Also leydig cells
What is parenchymal tissue?
Essential distinctive cells of an organ.
In testis, seminiferous tubules are parenchymal.
What is the penis?
Male external organ of reproduction.
What is the perineum?
External region between anus and scrotum in male.
What is the prepuce?
Foreskin; fold of skin covering tip of penis.
What is the prostate gland?
Exocrine gland at base of male urinary bladder.
- secretes fluid that contributes to semen
What is the scrotum?
External sac that contains the testes.
What is semen?
Spermatozoa (plural, sperm cells) and seminal fluid (prostatic and seminal secretions) discharged from urethra during ejaculation.
What are seminal vesicles?
Paired sac-like exocrine glands that secrete fluid (major part of semen) into vas deferens.
Seminiferous tubules?
Narrow, coiled tubules that produce sperm in testes.
