Chapter 9: Endocrine System and Hormones Flashcards
what are hormones
chemical messengers; cues for body to do things
what two things stimulate a gland
hormonal and humoral
what is hormonal
activated by hormones; hormones interacting with hormones
what is humoral
changing blood levels of certain ions stimulate hormone release
what is the neural stimuli of the endocrine system
nerve impulses that stimulate hormone release
what are the neural stimuli controlled by
sympathetic nervous systems
what is the pituitary gland controlled by
hypothalamus
what are the 2 functional lobes of the pituitary gland
posterior pituitary and anterior pituitary
what makes up the posterior pituitary
nervous tissue
what makes up the anterior pituitary
glandular tissue
what are the 6 anterior pituitary hormones
2 non-endocrine targets (Oxytocin and Antidiuretic hormone) and 4 stimulate other glands (tropic hormones) (GH, PRL, ACTH, Godadotropic hormone)
what are the characteristics of all anterior pituitary hormones
proteins, act through the secondary messenger system, reacted by stimuli (through negative feedback loop)
what is growth hormone responsible for
bones and muscles (causes amino acids to be built into proteins; fats broken down into energy)
what is the prolactin responsible for
mammary glands (milk production following childbirth
what is the follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone responsible for
testes or ovaries
what is the thyrotropic hormone responsible for
thyroid (influence the growth and activity of the thyroid)
what is the adrenocorticotropic hormone responsible for
adrenal cortex (regulates endocrine activity of the adrine cortex)
what are gonadotropic hormones
regulates activity of gonads
what is the follicle stimulating hormone
stimulates follicle development in the ovaries and stimulates sperm development in the testes
what is the luteinzing hormone
triggers ovulation and stimulates testosterone production in males
what are the 2 hormones of the posterior pituitary gland
oxytocin and antidiuretic hormone
what is the function of the oxytocin hormone
stimulates contractions of the uterus during labor and causes milk ejection
what is the function of the antidiuretic hormone
urine production; vasoconstruction which leads to increase blood pressure (vasopressin)
what causes vasopressin
salts and stress
what are the two hormones that the thyroid gland produces
thyroid hormone and calcitonin
what is the thyroid hormone
major metabolic hormone
