Chapter 8- Types of blood vessels Flashcards
Arterioles
Are small branches of arteries. One artery may branch into many arterioles that supply blood to the tissues
Artery
Carry blood away from the heart towards a specific part of the body
Blood pressure
The measurement of the force that blood pushes against the inside walls of the blood vessels
Blood velocity
The rate of blood flow
Blood vessels
Transport blood to and from the heart. Consists of arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules, and veins
Capillaries
A group of small blood vessels connecting an arteriole to a venule in the tissues; the sites of capillary-tissue fluid exchange that provides nutrients to cells and carries away waste products of cell metabolism
Cross-sectional area
Refers to the area of the circular opening (lumen) that exists inside the vessel; total cross-sectional area of vessels is smallest in arteries and veins and much larger in the capillaries, due to a larger number of vessels, impacts blood velocity and blood pressure
Veins
Are larger blood vessels that collect blood and return it to the heart
Venules
Small veins that collect blood draining from capillary beds
