Chapter 11- The Lymphatic System Flashcards
antibodies
Y-shaped protein used by the immune system to identify and neutralize foreign objects such as pathogenic bacteria and viruses
lymph fluid
Tissue fluid that has moved into lymphatic vessels; lymph fluid is filtered and returned to general circulation by the lymphatic system
lymph nodes
A small bean-shaped structure that is part of the body’s immune system, filter substances that travel through the lymphatic fluid, and they contain lymphocytes (white blood cells) that help the body fight infection and disease
lymph vessels (veins)
Collects lymph from the lymph capillaries and moves it into lymph ducts for transport to the subclavian veins so it can be returned to the bloodstream
lymphatic system
A network of lymph vessels and lymphoid organs found throughout the body; has three main functions: drains excess fluid (lymph) from the tissues and returns it to the circulatory system via the right and left subclavian veins; collects lipids in the lacteals found in the villi of the small intestine and transports them to the bloodstream; helps the immune system protect the body from pathogens
lymphocytes
A type of white blood cell that acts in the lymphatic system; the cortex (outside) of lymph nodes contains many lymphocytes that are activated to fight off pathogens; lymphocytes produce antibodies (y-shaped proteins) that combine with antigens (proteins or polysaccharides on foreign cells) to from inactive antigen-antibody complexes
pathogens
Any organism that can produce disease
valves
A device that controls the flow of a fluid
