antibody
Y-shaped protein used by the immune system to identify and neutralize foreign objects such as pathogenic bacteria and viruses
antigen
A foreign substance that is recognized by the immune system as non-self and needs to be destroyed
blood
A form of liquid body tissue that has many functions in the body such as transporting oxygen and nutrients to the tissue fluid surrounding cells, carrying away carbon dioxide and other cellular waste products and balancing fluid levels, body temperature, ion concentrations, and pH within the body
hemoglobin
A blood buffer that picks up or releases hydrogen ions
plasma
The liquid portion of the blood; mainly consists of water; 7% to 8% of plasma consists of proteins
plasma proteins
Proteins present in blood plasma. They serve many different functions and include proteins such as albumin, antibodies and fibrinogen
platelets (thrombocytes)
Cell fragments that break away from larger cells in the red bone marrow involved in blood clotting following tissue injury
red blood cells (erythrocytes)
Carry oxygen from the lungs and deliver it to the body tissues in the capillaries
white blood cells (leukocytes)
Involved in protecting the body against both infectious disease and foreign invaders
