The word cum has several, completely unrelated meanings.
- As a preposition, cum is translated as with or together. It is compounded with some pronouns, especially tecum, mecum, vobiscum, nobiscum, and quibuscum.
- As a conjunction, cum can introduce three distinct types of subordinate clauses:
- Temporal clauses: cum = when
- Causal clauses: cum = since, because
- Concessive clauses: cum = although
