Q

Translating Ut

A

When ut introduces a clause with the verb in the indicative mood, it means either as, when, or where according to the context. The clause that it introduces is either a clause of comparison, a clause of time, or a clause of place.

When ut introduces a clause with the verb in the subjunctive mood, the clause may be:

  1. A clause of purpose
  2. A clause of consequence/result
  3. A noun clause

In all these cases, ut may be translated into English as that.
