Chapter 7: The Endomembrane System Flashcards
1
Q
What is the endomembrane system?
A
an interconnected network of organelles of the secretory pathway, and includes the lysosome
2
Q
What is the function of the endomembrane system?
A
to sort, ship, and recycle proteins
3
Q
What are the steps in the process of exocytosis?
A
- DNA starts in the nucleus, which then gets turned into mRNA
- The mRNA travels to the rough ER, and the mRNA is a template for ribosomes to make proteins
- Vesicles bud off from the ER membrane with the new proteins inside
- These proteins then go to the Golgi Apparatus for further processing
- Another vesicle buds off from the Golgi to help the protein exit the cell
4
Q
How are proteins sent to the right place in the Golgi?
A
Proteins contain amino acid sequences that code for various destinations within the Golgi. Some codes contain specific “tags” that are picked up by receptor proteins destined for these locations/destinations.
