Chapter 7: The Cytoskeleton Flashcards
What are the functions of the cytoskeleton?
Provides structural support for the cell, helps with cell division and mobility
What are the three distinct elements of the cytoskeletal system?
Actin Microfilaments, Intermediate Filaments, and Microtubules
Actin Microfilaments
small and made up of actin; maintain cell shape, moves the cell in conjunction with the motor protein myosin and important in muscle cell contraction, important for helping animal cells divide in two, move organelles and cytoplasm in plants, fungi, animals
Intermediate Filaments
medium sized and made of keratins, lamins or others; main shape of cell and anchors the nucleus and some other organelles
Microtubules
hollow tube; main cell shape and moves cell via flagella or cilia with help by the motor protein Kinesin, move chromosomes during cell division, assist formation of cell plate during plant cell division, provides tracks for intracellular transport
What is the Axoneme?
made up of microtubules and makes of the cilia and flagella to help with movement
