Chapter 7: Human Movement Science Flashcards
Kinesiology
Study of movement through anatomy and physiology.
Agonists
Primary muscle providing force.
Synergists
Secondary Muscles helping Agonist
Feed-Forward Activation
When a muscle is automatically activated during a movement.
Antagonists
Muscles on the opposite side of agonist muscles.
Reciprocal Inhibition
When agonist receives signal to contract, and antagonist to lengthen.
Altered Reciprocal Inhibition
When overactive agonist muscle decreases neural drive to antagonist.
Altered Length-Tension Relationship
Muscle’s resting length is too short or too long which reduces the force it can produce.
Stretch-Shortening Cycle
Loading muscle eccentrically to prepare for a quick concentric contraction.
Force-Couple Relationship
The synergistic action of multiple muscles working together to produce movement around a joint.
Torque
A movement that produces rotation
Neuromuscular Efficiency
Ability of nervous system to recruit the correct muscles to produce force, reduce force, and dynamically stabilize the body in all three planes of motion.
