Chapter 14: Flexibility Training Concepts Flashcards
Myofascial
Connective tissue that includes muscles and fascia
Soft Tissue
Connects, supports, and surrounds bodily structures and organs.
Postural Distortion Patterns
Predictable patterns of muscle imbalances.
Overactive
When elevated neural drive causes a muscle to stay in a chronic state of contraction.
Underactive
When a muscle is experiencing neural inhibition and limited neuromuscular recruitment.
Autogenic Inhibition
Prevents muscles from using more force than the bones and tendons can tolerate.
Cumulative Injury Cycle
Tissue trauma that will cause inflammation, muscle spasm, adhesions, altered neuromuscular control, and muscle imbalances.
Nociceptors
Pain receptors located in skin and fascial connective tissues.
Davis’s Law
States that soft tissue models along the line of stress.
Self-Myofascial Techniques
Treats and breaks up adhesions of the fascia and the surrounding muscle tissues.
Adhesions
Organs/tissues in the body stick (adhere) to other internal surfaces.
Stretch Tolerance
Ability to experience physical sensations of a stretch and reduce discomfort felt at the end range of motion.
