Chapter 7 Flashcards
Neutrophiles
An active phagocytic cell in bacterial infection; can live within the range of pH 5.5 to 8
Acidophiles
An algae that grows in acidic pools between 0 and 1.0 pH
Alkalinophiles
Live in hot pools and soils that contain high levels of basic minerals
Halophiles
A type of osmophile that requires high concentrations of salt
Osmophiles
Live in habitats with a high solute concentration
Osmotolerant
Adaptable to wide concentrations in solutes
Barophiles
Deep sea microbes that exist under pressures many times that of the atmosphere
Biofilms
Result when an organism attached to a substrate by some form of extra cellular matrix that binds them together in complex organized layers
Quorum sensing
Stages including self monitoring of cell density, secretion of chemical signals, and genetic activation
Planktonic
Free floating or swimming microbes that are attracted to a surface and come to rest or settle down
Quorum
A critical number of cells that indicates the minimum number of group members necessary to conduct business
The generation or doubling time
The time required to complete the fission cycle from parent cells to new daughter cells
