Chapter 6.1 Classical Conditioning Flashcards
Learning
a long term change in an organism’s behavior or thought as a result of experience
Habituation
process of responding less strongly over time to repeated stimuli.
sensitization
process of responding more strongly over time to repeated stimuli
Acquisition
is the phase during which a conditioned response is established
extinction
is the reduction and elimination of the conditioned response after conditioned stimulus is presented repeatedly without the unconditioned stimulus
Pavlovian
Classical conditioning
Unconditioned stimulus
stimulus that elicits an autonomic response
unconditioned response
autonomic response to a nonneutral stimulus that does not need to be learned
Neutral stimulus
it is a stimula that has no meaning at first but it is paired with unconditioned stimulus.
Conditioned stimulus
Neutral stimulus becomes conditioned stimulus because of learning. Without the unconditoned stimulus it creates similar response
Conditioned response
response previously associated with a nonneutral stimulus that is elicted by a neutral stimulus through conditioning
Stimulus generalization
occurs when similar conditioned stimulus elicit the same conditioned response. Driving someone’s car without a new learning.
Stimulus discrimination
occurs when one exhibits a particular conditioned response only to certain stimuli, but not to similar others. Movie about tornado vs tornado in real life
Spontaneous recovery
sudden reemerge of an extinct conditioned response after delay in exposure to the conditioned stimulus. suppressing
renewal effect
sudden reemerge of a conditioned response following extinction when an animal is returned to the environment in which the conditioned response was acquired
Higher order conditioning
developing conditioned response to a conditioned stimulus by virtue of its association with anoter conditioned stimulus. feeling hungry just seeing the pictures of food etc.. becomes weaker the more distant the association to the original conditioned stimulus. explains why merely hearing want a Coke? can make you thirsty
acquiring phobias
conditioning and stimulus generalization. Little Albert
Latent inhibition
difficulty in establishing classical conditioning to a conditioned stimulus we’ve repeatedly experienced alone, that is without the unconditioned stimulus.
Fetishism
seems to be partly due to classical conditioning. classical conditioning may also explain our disgust reactions to safe food and drink
