Psychoavtive drug
substance that contains chemicals similar to those found naturally in our brains that alter consciousness by changing chemical processes in neurons.
Substance abuse disorder
significant impairment or distress occurs with drug use. Involves tolerance and withdrawal
tolerance
reduction in the effect of a drug as a result of repeated use.
withdrawal
unpleasant effects of reducing or stopping consumption of a drug that users had consumed habitually
Physical dependence
drug is used to avoid withdrawal symptoms
Psychological dependence
drug use is motivated by cravings
differences affects drug use
sociocultural influences and acceptance, addictive personality is not true but some traits influence usage (impulsivity and sociability). Reinforcing self medication cycle, it is only works when a person believe so. Genetic influence, some asians cant drink too much
Mood modification
refers to how the activity that one is addicted to can be used for different purposes. self medicate
conflict
can be intrapsychic and interpersonal
intrapsychic conflict
refers to the conflict that a person can experience within themselves.
Interpersonal conflict
refers to the conflict that arises within the individual and their surroundings
there are three stages of relapse
emotional relapse, mental relapse, and physical relapse.
emotional relapse
unhealty emotions and responses and isolation of self from others, neglecting one’s self. Its influenced by HALT; hunger, anger, lonely, tired.
alcohol and sedative-hypnotics
depress the effects of the central nervous system
alcohol
its the most common one and has stimulating effect at low doses (inhibiting emotion and behavior) but depressant effects at higher doses.
