Stereotype
A belief -positive or negative- about the characteristics of members of a group that is applied generally to most members of the group It can lead prejudice. Cause ultimate attribution error (all of the x race people are lazy) Attribute positive behaviors to luck or rare exceptions.
Prejudice
The drawing of negative conclusion about a person, group of people or situation prior to evaluating the evidince. It can lead discrimination We all hold some prejudice because of adaptive conservatism
adaptive concervatism
evolutionary perspective distrusting others and unfamiliar or different
In group bias
tendency to favor individuals within our group
Out group homogeneity
tendency to view all individuals who are the outsiders are similar
Scapegoat Hypothesis
Claim that prejudice arises from blaming other groups for our misfortunes. blaming immigrants
Just World hypothesis
The world is fair and all this happened because of a reason fallacy, many people believe that victims of serious dieseas including cancer or aids are responsible for their plights. Blaming the victim cases
Combating prejudice
Robbers cave study (aiming common purpose, work together); Jigsaw classrooms independent contribution to a shared project.
Discrimination
Negative behavior towards members of out groups. Prejudice is only negative attitudes but discrimination is behavior.
