Chapter 6 Muscles Flashcards
Most skeletal muscles attach one _________ to another.
bone
What are the three types of Muscle Tissue?
skeletal muscle
cardiac muscle
smooth muscle
What are the three part of a skeletal muscle?
Origin
Insertion
Body
Origin of the skeletal muscle
the muscle attached to a stationary bone
insertion of the skeletal muscle
the muscle’s attachment to a more movable bone
body of a skeletal muscle
the rest of the muscle
what do muscles attach to bones by?
tendons
What are the functions of the skeletal muscle?
movement
posture
treat productions
How do Prime movers work with Synergists and Antagonists?
as prime movers and synergist muscles at a joint contract. WHen antagonist muscle contract, the produce a movement opposite to that of the prome movers and thin synergist muscles
What type of muscle contraction maintains our posture?
tonic contraction
What is the difference between fever and hypothermia?
Hypothermia- any decrease in temperature below normal
Fever- elevation in body temperature of a degree or two or more is almost always a sign of illness
Where does the heat required to maintain our normal body temperature come from?
the heat released during muscular contraction
What happens to the muscle cells that continuously stimulated without proper rest?
the strength of the muscle contraction decreases resulting in fatigue.
What is ATP require for ?
muscle contraction
When oxygen runs low our muscle use a type of energy that does not require oxygen and often leads to the build up of ________
causing your muscle to be sore
lactic acid
why do we have labored breathing after excercise?
to get oxygen
What two things meet at a neuromuscular junction?
nerve ending and muscle fiber
Explain how individual muscle fibers have all or none reaction to muscle stimulus.
when a muscle fiber is subjective to a threshold stimulus it contracts completely
What are the types of skeletal muscle contractions?
twitch
tetanic
isotonic
isometric
What happens to muscles during and extended period of time of inactivity?
muscles shrink in mass
What to we call this decrease of a muscle ?
disuse atrophy
what do we call an increase of a muscle ?
hypertrophy
what is the difference between Aerobic and Anaerobic exercise?
Aerobic exercise doesn’t result in muscle hypertrophy it increases muscle’s ability to sustain moderate exercise over a long period. Anarobic exercise in primarily isotonic movement
isotonic excercise
pushing a wall
not really any muscles contract
isotonic exercise
running
bicycling
makes your muscle bigger
