Motivation
The forces acting on or within a person that causes the person to behave in a specific, goal directed manner.
Why is motivation important?
Attract individuals and encourage them to stay.
Allow individuals to perform tasks for which they were hired.
Stimulate individuals to go beyond the team performance and become creative and innovative.

Ability x motivation = performance
Ability
The person’s natural talent, as well as learned competencies, for performing goal related tasks.
Need
Deficiencies that a person experiences at a particular time.

Acquired need Theory
- Need for achievement – the desire to accomplish something difficult, attain a high standard of success, master complex tasks and surpass others.
- Need for affiliation – the desire to form close personal relationships, avoid conflict, and establish one friendships.
- Need for power – the desire to influence or control others,and have authority over others.
3 characteristics of high achievers
- Set their own goals.
- Avoid extremely difficult goals. Prefer moderate goals.
- Preferred tasks that provide immediate feedback.
Motivator-hygiene model
Area of satisfaction:
- Achievement
- recognition
- responsibility
- work itself
- personal growth
Area of dissatisfaction -working conditions - pay and security -company policy -supervisors -interpersonal relationships
Expectancy theory
Suggests that motivation depends on individuals expectations about their ability to perform task and receive desired rewards.
Equity theory
Focuses on individual’s perceptions of how fairly they are treated compared to others. Example people think they are paid the same as their coworkers for the same job, they will believe the treatment is fair and equitable.
