How do you sustain culture?
What is important to leader/teams? How the organization handles crisis what is rewarded in the organization? What is modeled by leaders? Who gets promoted? Organizations rites, ceremonies, stories
Recruit employees who fit culture, org culture, remove employees who deviate from culture
Ex- happy hour – the place where decisions are made. FaceTime is rewarded over productivity. Workaholic behavior rewarded. Only people who suck up to the boss get promoted
Five types of cultural artifacts
Symbol, story, practices, language, heroes
Visible elements of culture
Artifacts such as dress, office layout, symbols, slogans, ceremonies
InVisible elements of culture
Expressed values, such as the penny idea, “the HP way”. Underlying assumptions and deep beliefs such as people here care about one another like a family.
Clan culture
Tradition, loyalty, personal commitment, extensive socialization, teamwork, self management, and social influence or attributes of a clan culture. Example-Southwest Airlines
Entrepreneurial culture
High levels of risk taking and creativity characterize an entrepreneurial culture.
Ex- apple, google
Bureaucratic culture
And organizational practices formality, rules, standard operating procedures and hierarchal coordination.
Example - Walmart, McDonald’s, military
Market culture
The achievement of measurable and demanding goals, especially those that are financial and market-based (sales, profit).
Ex- E*TRADE, Goldman Sachs, car dealers, northwestern mutual,
Why is it hard to change a culture?
1 – Culture gives employees an organizational employees identity.
2 – Culture provides stability.
3 – cultural helps focus employees behavior.
