Conflict
Process in which one party (person or group) perceives its interests are being opposed or negatively affected by another party
Intra-personal conflict
Occurs within an individual and usually involves some form of goal, cognitive, or affective conflict
Intra-group conflict
Refers to disputes among some or all of groups members, which affect group dynamics and effectiveness.
Example – family run business often have this type of conflict
Interpersonal conflict
Occurs when two or more individuals perceive that their attitudes, behaviors or preferred goals are an opposition.
Example – members of your study group want to study while members of your college friend circle want to go out
Intergroup conflict
Refers to opposition, disagreements and disputes between groups or teams.
Example – disputes between the union and management
Compromising
Behaviors have an intermediate level of cooperation and assertiveness.
Example - I give in to others if they are willing to meet me halfway.
Collaborating
High levels of cooperative and assertive behaviors.
Example – I try to investigate an issue to find a solution that works well for all of us. Win win approach
Forcing
Refers to assertive and Uncooperative behaviors and represents a win lose approach to interpersonal conflict.
Example - like it or not what I say goes
Avoiding
Unassertive and uncooperative behaviors. Do not engage.
Example - that’s OK. It wasn’t important anyway. Let’s leave well enough alone. Never mind
Accommodating
Cooperative and Unassertive behavior.
Example middle – if it makes other people happy, I am all for it.
Distributing negotiation strategy
Traditional win lose situation in which one party’s gain is another parties loss
Integrative negotiation strategy
Joint problem-solving to achieve results that benefit both parties
Attitudinal structuring
Process by which partys seek to establish feelings and relationships
Negotiators dilemma
A situation in which the tactics of self gain tend to restrain moves to create greater mutual gain
Mediation
Process by which a third-party helps two or more other parties resolve one or more conflicts
