Kohlberg’s stages of moral development
1- obedience and punishment (does the right thing to avoid punishment)
2- Instrumental (does the right thing to get something in return)
3- Interpersonal (does the right thing to please or get approval from people)
4- Law and Order (ethical behavior equals doing one’s duty, respect for authority, maintaining social order)
5- Social Contract (The rate is good for the greatest number. Situational)
6- universal principals (appropriate conduct determined by individual conscience, based on universal principles)
3 self-serving principles
Hedonist - you do whatever is in your best interest.
Might=Right - do whatever you are powerful enough to impost on others without respect to society approval.
Org interests- do what is good for the company.
3 balancing interests principles
Means-end: overall good justifies a moral transgression.
Utilitarian: greatest good for greatest number
Professional Standards: can decision be explained before a group of your peers?
3 concern for others Principals
Disclosure: act on the basis of how the general public would likely respond to the facts publicly.
Distributive Justice: act on the basis of treating all people are equal rather than based on arbitrary characteristics like age gender race.
Golden Rule: treat others how you would want to be treated
Organizational culture
Reflects the shared and learned values, beliefs and attitudes of its members.
Sustainable development
A pattern of resource use that strives to me current human needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. For example the Patagonia water movement.
