Chapter 6 Flashcards
Sediments
Pieces of material that have been weathered down to pieces
Deposition
When sediments hit the ground
Lithification
The process that makes sediment into sedimentary rocks
Cementation
What happens when growing minerals cement minerals into solid rock
Graded bedding
Bedding where the particles become heavier and bigger toward the bottom layers
Bedding
Sedimentary rocks arranged in horizontal layers
Cross bedding
Bedding that’s formed when layers of sediment move across a horizontal surface
Evaporites
The layers of chemical sedimentary rocks that form from when s body of water is saturated then the water evaporates
Regional metamorphism
Metamorphism occurring in large belts caused by high temperature and pressure
Contact metamorphism
When molten rocks touch solid rocks
Hydrothermal metamorphism
Caused by hot water touching rocks
Folliated
A metamorphic rock is said to be foliated if it has wavy layers and mineral bands
Non foliated
A metamorphic rock is said to be nonfoliated if has block shaped minerals
Porphyroblasts
Rocks larger than surrounding rocks
The rock cycle
The process in which rocks get changed
