Ch 26 Flashcards
Fuel
Material burned to produce heat or power
Peat
Light spongy material formed in bogs and used for fuel
Fossil fuel
Energy source formed over geologic time as a result of compression and partial decomposition of dead plant and animal matter. Usually considered a non renewable resource.
Photovoltaic cell
Thin transparent wafer that is made up of layers of boron and phosphorus enriched silicon. Converts solar energy into electric energy
Geothermal energy
Energy produced by naturally occurring steam or hot water
Biogas
A mixture of gases that includes 50 to 70 percent methane and 30 to 48 percent carbon dioxide.
Gasohol
Gasoline mixed with ethanol, can be burned in gasoline engines
Energy efficiency
The use of energy resources in ways that are most productive
Cogeneration
The production of two usable forms of energy at the same time from the same process
Sustainable energy
Involves the global management of Earth’s natural resources to meet energy demands without causing environmental damage
