Ch 28 Flashcards
Refracting telescope
Telescope that uses lenses to bring visible light to a focus
Reflecting telescope
Telescope that uses mirrors to bring visible light to a focus
Interferometry
The process of linking telescopes together so they act as one
Spinoffs
Technology developed by NASA and used for commercial purposes
Albedo
The amount of light a surface reflects
Highlands
Light in color, mountainous, and heavily cratered regions on the Moon
Maria
(Singular: mare) Dark, smooth plains regions on the Moon. About 3km lower than highlands
Impact crater
All craters on the Moon are this, formed when objects in space crash into the lunar surface
Ejecta
When an object crashes into the lunar surface, the material blasted out by the impact is this.
Rays
Some craters have long trails of Ejecta (this) that radiate outward
Rilles
Meandering, valley like structures on Maria
Regolith
A layer of loose ground-up rock on the surface of the Moon. Averages several meters in depth but varies wildly according to location
Ecliptic
The plane on which Earth orbits around the sun
Summer solstice
When the Sun is in such a position that it is directly overhead at the Tropic of Cancer
Winter solstice
When the Sun is in such a position that it is directly overhead at the Tropic of Capricorn
