Chapter 5 Flashcards
Igneous rock
Rocks that are solidified magma
Lava
Magma that’s not underground
Extrusive
Igneous rocks that cool on earth’s surface
Intrusive
Igneous rocks that cool below earth’s surface
Partial melting
The process where some minerals melt while others remain solid
Fractional crystallization
The process where different minerals form at different temperatures
Bowen’s reaction series
The thing that describes the relationship between cooling magma and mineral formation
Felsic rocks
Light colored rocks that contain Quartz and have high silica contents
Mafic rocks
Dark colored rocks that have lower silica contents and have lots of iron and magnesium
Ultramafic rocks
Rocks that have low silica contents and very high levels of iron and magnesium
Porphyritic texture
Large crystals surrounded by smaller crystals
Pegmatites
A vein with extremely large grained minerals
Kimberlites
A rain ultramafic rock, named after Kimberly Africa where they were first identified
