Chapter 52: Ecology and the Biosphere Flashcards
Ecology
the study of living things interacting with their environment
Climate
weather conditions made up by temp, precipitation, light, and wind
Microclimate
small and localized weather patterns (under a rock/log)
Macroclimate
weather on a global or regional scale (mountains/large bodies of water)
Climograph
shows the average temperature and precipitation
Terrestrial Biomes
desert, grassland, tropical, temperate, taiga, tundra
Aquatic Biomes
freshwater(lake/pond), ocean(saltwater/marine)
Freshwater Zones
Littoral Zone: Shallow water (close to shore)
Limnetic Zone: Open water area (light cant reach the bottom)
Ocean Zones
Intertidal Zone: ocean meets land (between low and high tides)
Neritic Zone: Relatively shallow water
Oceanic Zone: Area lying beyond the continental shelf (huge drop)
Abyssal Zone: deepest region
Shared Water Zones
Photic Zone: Enough light for photosynthesis
Aphotic Zone: No light
Benthic Zone: Bottom of the body of water
Pelagic Zone: Open water
Oligotrophic Lake
low nutrient content, little plant life, colder climates, lower oxygen levels
Eutophic Lake
nutrient rich (phosphorus and nitrogen: stimulate overgrowth of algae), to much algae-> low oxygen levels-> kills fish
Biotic factors that affect distribution
Predators, Herbivores, Pollinators, Parasites
Abiotic factors that affect distribution
Temp, Water, Oxygen, Salinity, Light, Rocks
Epiphyte
Air plant (ex. orchid)
