Chapter 5: Structures and Functions of the Respiratory System Flashcards
What is essential to the survival and function of living cells?
Oxygen.
What is the Respiratory System responsible for?
Supplying the blood with oxygen for transportation to the cells in all parts of the body.
What removes the waste product carbon dioxide from the body?
The Respiratory System.
How does Respiration or Breathing begins?
Inhalation.
During inhalation the Thoracic Cavity expands and the diaphragm contracts, What does this causes?
Decreases pressure in the lungs causing air to be drawn in through the nose and mouth.
What does the tiny hair called Cilia and Mucous Membranes do?
Remove debris before the air enters the pharynx and then into the trachea.
What happens once air passes through the trachea?
It enters either the left or right bronchi.
What are Bronchi?
Two large tubes that branch out from the trachea and direct air into the lungs.
The lungs are the essential organs of respiration and are divided into?
Lobes.
How many lobes does the right lung has?
3 lobes.
How many lobes does the left lung has?
2 lobes.
Why does the left lung has only 2 lobes?
Because the heart is located on that side of the body.
Within the lung, each bronchus divides and subdivides into?
Bronchioles.
What does Bronchioles do?
Branch throughout the lungs and become increasingly smaller.
The air enters the Alveoli, what are the Alveoli?
Tiny grape like clusters known as air sacs.
