Chapter 5 Flashcards
What three general types of organisms can photosynthesize?
Some bacteria
Protists (algae)
Plants
Photosynthesis equation
Anabolism or catabolism?
6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP —> C6H12O6 + 6O2
Anabolism
Photosynthesis
Purpose?
Occurs in eukaryotic cells where?
to make sugar (glucose) and oxygen
A source energy for respiration
Chloroplasts
Why is sunlight needed for photosynthesis? What is it providing that is necessary for the process ?
Sunlight is providing light energy that is needed as a source of energy to produce oxygen and glucose
Why is CO2 needed? What are the carbon atoms used for in the process?
To make glucose
Where does the O2 in the atmosphere come from?
From H2O
Relationship between cellular respiration and photosynthesis?
They both use the same ingredients just in opposite direction (reactants + products)
Complementary processes
Both chemical pathways that furnish chemical energy for cells
Two major ways we depend on photosynthesis?
Energy (Cellular respiration)
Raw materials (growth and repair )
What are the sugars produced by photosynthesis used for ?
Energy for respiration
Raw material for making other organic molecules
What is chlorophyll?
Pigments in the membrane that absorb light energy from the sun
Why are plants green?
Chlorophyll absorbs red and blue light (and uses that energy for photosynthesis) but reflects green light
