chapter 5 Flashcards
What are autotrophs and heterotrophs
auto- A primary producer or a self feeder
het- an organism that gets their energy off of feeding from other things
what is photosynthesis
How plants make their own energy
What is the balanced equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H20 = C6H12O6 + 6O2
What are two ways that
plants use carbohydrates made during photosynthesis?
- cellular respiration to make atp
- make cellulose
What is the electromagnetic spectrum?
the collection of all the different wavelengths of light.
what are photons
the particle of light
How does the wavelength of various forms of
radiation relate to their energy?
The shorter the wavelength the more energy and the longer the wavelength the less energy
What is the range in
wavelength (nm) of visible light?
400-700
what are photosynthetic pigments
pigments involved in photosynthesis
What colors do chlorophyll a, b, and carotenoids reflect?
A- green
b- lighter green
Carotenoids-yellow/orange
What occurs in mesophyll
photosynthesis
What are the two stages of photosynthesis?
light reactions and carbon reactions
What are the reactants and products of the light and carbon reactions?
Light= H2O (reactant) and O2 (product)
Carbon= CO2 (reactant) and Sugar (product)
What is a photosystem, and where are they found?
found in the thylakoid membrane and is a cluster of pigment molecules and proteins
What happens when light strikes an antenna
molecule?
the light is redirected to the reaction center
What is the function of a reaction center?
It gives up electrons to get them excited
Why is water required in the light reactions?
because it replenishes the electrons that are lost to keep the reaction going
In a non-cyclic pathway, where are excited electrons shuttled?
down the electron transport chain
What work is accomplished as electrons are
moved through the electron transport chain?
the transport of hydrogen to make atp
At the second photosystem (Photosystem I), what is required to reenergize the electron to produce NADPH?
more light
How is ATP synthase involved in the production of ATP?
it synthesizes atp
