Chapter 48: Colorectal cancer/ IBS Flashcards
how much of the is affected by Colorectal Cancer (CRC)?
The incidence of CRC in the sigmoid colon is 25%. It is 30% in the rectum. Incidence in the descending colon is 6%, which is lower than in any other part of the colon. Incidence in the transverse colon is of half that in the
ascending colon and cecum.
IBS-M (M for Mix)
IBS-M means the patient has IBS with a mix of diarrhea and constipation.
Which patient population is more susceptible to direct inguinal
hernias?
Older adults
what electrolyte is associated with intestinal obstruction?
Decreased serum potassium and sodium levels are associated with intestinal obstruction. it will also cause high BUN due to fluid shifts.
most common cause of obstruction in elderly people.
In people age 60 years or older, diverticulitis, tumors, and fecal
impaction are the most common causes of obstruction.
nursing care for a patient with NG tube due to intestinal obstruction:
- monitor I/O.
- assess for NG tube patency.
- irrigate NG tube q 4hrs.
- secure ng tube to nostril and gown.
- confirm placement of tube before use.
alvimopan
The patient is experiencing a paralytic ileus because of the effects of anesthesia on bowel peristalsis. Therefore the nurse would administer
alvimopan to increase GI motility. Laxatives would not be given as this can
increase abdominal pressure.
indirect inguinal
An indirect inguinal hernia occurs when there is a downward displacement of
the intestines or momentum into the inguinal canal and, in men, often
descending into the scrotum.
hernias are caused by
abdominal wall weakness and increased in intraabdominal pressure.
priority intervention to decrease pressure on abdominal incision for post op care.
The bowel obstruction can place extra pressure on the abdominal incision as
distention progresses. Therefore the priority intervention would be to insert
an NG tube as this will decompress the abdomen.
