Chapter 4.1-4.2 Flashcards
Dennett’s Definition of Consciousness
there are multiple channels of parallel consciousness that people must organize, and do so based of their experience, social groups, and culture
Consciousness
your awareness of what’s going on inside and outside of your head at any given moment, which you then use to organize your behaviors
Altered State of Consciousness
state when there is a shift in the quality or pattern of mental activity compared to normal, waking conscious
Waking Consciouness
when thoughts, feelings, and sensations are clear and organized, making the person feel alert
Kinds of Thought Processes (2 answers and their importance)
1) Controlled Processes: processes that require a high amount of attention and shouldn’t be multi-tasked
2) Automatic processes: processes that require a low amount of attention and could be multi-tasked
With repetition, controlled processes can become automatic in our head leading to problems
Examples of altered states of consciousness (4)
1) daydreaming
2) hypnosis
3) influence of drugs
4) sleep
