6.3-6.5: The Infomation-Processing Model Flashcards
Sensory Memory
the first system of memory where raw information from the senses is held for brief period of time
Iconic Sensory Memory
visual sensory memory that only lasts for a fraction of a second
Masking
new iconic information replaces old in a quarter of a second
Echoic Sensory Memory
auditory sensory memory that lasts only 2-4 seconds
Short-Term Memory
the second system of memory where information is held for around 30 seconds
Selective Attention
the ability to focus on one stimulus among all sensory input
Working Memory
an active system that processes information within Short-Term Memory
Maintenance Rehearsal
repeatedly practicing information to maintain its position in Short-Term Memory
Long-Term Memory
the third system of memory where information is stored more or less permanently
Elaborative Rehearsal
connecting new information to something already known in order to increase the number of retrieval cues
Non-declarative Memories
Implicit and unconscious memories of skills, habits, and conditioned responses that affect conscious behavior
Anterograde Amnesia
inability to form Declarative Memories after trauma
Declarative Memories
Explicit and conscious memories of what is known: facts and information
Semantic Declarative Memories
general knowledge of language and information
Episodic Declarative Memories
memories of personal history and events
