What does federal mean?
It’s the national government (ex. Washington DC)
What is justice?
“Fairness in law and politics”
- Judicial branch
- Judged by case and not appearance in court (ideal)
- Fair trial
What does “domestic tranquility” mean in the preamble?
The idea of having peace and safety at home (and throughout the country)
What does “Liberty” mean in the preamble?
“Freedom to live as you please, as long as you obey the laws and respect the rights of others.”
- Freedom with certain limitations (usually the limitations are people)
- Your freedom ends where someone’s rights begins
What does “perfect union” mean in the preamble?
The goal to get the country to be united
- E pluribus Unum
- “From many one”
- we all come from different places but
we are united by our country
- Branches of government help each other
- unite 50 states
How does the Supreme Court handle justice?
“All people must be treated fairly regardless of race, religion, gender, country of origin, political beliefs, or financial status.”
- no judgement except on case
- doesn’t actually exist
- everyone treated equal
What is judicial review?
The Supreme court can rule laws constitutional or unconstitutional (power of the supreme court)
Why is a national system of courts necessary?
So that the law is applied fairly across the country (equality/justice for all)
What is the national police force called?
FBI (federal bureau of investigation)
How does the constitution provide for the common defense?
It allows the government to declare war and raise and organize an army/military
Describe the term “promote the general welfare”
The government is responsible for making sure that its citizens are safe and thriving (enforcing laws promotes safety, healthcare, etc.)
Name 2 safeguards of Liberty
- No one is above the law (Constitution is the supreme law of the land)
- Checks and balances in our government
