Why were the Native Americans still upset at the British after the French and Indian War ended?
Since Britain claimed the Ohio River Valley, a very valuable area of land, many colonists traveled/settled there. This upset the Native Americans because the colonists were rude to them (unlike the French). This caused several fights/clashes between the colonists and the Native Americans
Who was Pontiac and what did he do?
Pontiac was a Native American Chief who sort of became the leader of attacking the British. He raided several British forts, and generally endangered the safety of the colonists. He was the reason the Proclamation of 1763 was made.
What was the Proclamation of 1763?
A Proclamation stating that colonists could not settle west past the crest of the Appalachian Mountains.
Why was the Proclamation of 1763 made?
It was made to keep the colonists safe due to arising conflicts with the Native Americans
Why were the colonists angry about the Proclamation?
The colonists felt that they had a right to that land, and that the British government should not control where they settled. Additionally, troops were sent to the colonies to enforce the Proclamation, which resulted in the colonists having to pay more/
Why did Britain need to constantly tax the colonies (and other places too)
Winning the French and Indian War caused Britain to be in debt since Britain spent all of its money trying to win the war.
What was the Sugar Act?
A tax on molasses that also helped British officials find smugglers.
What was the Stamp Act?
A tax on legal documents like “…wills, diplomas, marriage papers…newspapers, almanacs, playing cards, and even dice.”
Why were the colonists so upset about the Stamp Act?
They believed it was unjust for them to be taxed by the Parliament when they had no say in it/no representatives in it. This sparked the protest slogan “No taxation without representation”.
What did the colonists do about the Stamp Act?
Delegates from the colonies wrote several petitions to the king. Additionally, many colonists boycotted British goods. Eventually, the Stamp Act was repealed.
What were the Townshend Acts?
A tax on glass, paper, paint, lead, and tea. “The Townshend Acts also set up new ways to collect taxes.”
Writs of assistance
A legal document that allowed officers to inspect your ship without a reason.
How did the colonists react to the Townshend Acts?
They stopped importing items taxed by the act.
Who were the Sons of Liberty?
A group of colonists who protested the British by mostly mocking them. This was founded by Samuel Adams
