Who was Comte de Rochambeau?
Comte de Rochambeau was a French general who, alongside Washington and Lafayette, took his troops to the Yorktown peninsula to trap Cornwallis and his troops.
Who was Admiral de Grasse?
Admiral de Grasse was a French navy admiral (head of the navy) who cut off Cornwallis and his troops by the sea.
What is a siege?
“A siege occurs when an army surrounds and blockades an enemy position in an attempt to capture it.”
Ex. Yorktown
How did America and France win Yorktown?
They won Yorktown by completely surrounding and trapping Cornwallis’s troops at the peninsula. Cornwallis was beginning to run low on supplies and was facing many casualties. He knew he couldn’t escape the situation, so he surrendered on October 19, 1781.
Who was sent to negotiate Peace talks in Paris in 1782?
Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, John Jay from New York, and Henry Laurens.
What does ratify mean?
Ratify means to approve by signing something.
What did the Treaty of Paris say?
It said that America was now recognized as an independent nation. Its borders were from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mississippi River, and the Great Lakes to Florida. Florida was returned to Spain, and America promised to pay back Loyalists for their damage.
What are the reasons that the Americans won the Revolutionary War? (6/7)
- They knew the land better
- The British supplies were thousands of miles away
- They received help from other nations (France & Spain)
- They had an important shared cause
- The Patriot troops slowly got better from fighting against the British.
- Since America was so big, it didn’t affect the patriots when the British took over a city (they’d just move)
- It also didn’t affect the patriots when the British took over a big city because most Americans were farmers
