A

The Battle of Long Island was a series of Battles that started in Long Island and progressed through New York and New Jersey. What happened was British General Howe landed with his powerful troops on Long Island, and easily won a great victory against the Patriots by invading the New York area.

A

Nathan Hale was a young patriot soldier who was known as America’s first spy. He went behind enemy lines to spy on the British, and then reported back to the Patriots. Unfortunately, he was caught by Loyalists and was hanged.

A

The Crisis was important because after the Battle of Long Island, the Americans began to lose hope. The Crisis was written as a way to inspire Americans to not give up and to keep fighting, and maybe to die for independence.

A

In the Battle of Trenton, Washington led his troops on a surprise attack against the Hessians (British troops). Washington attacked early in the morning of December 26th, so he and his troops were easily able to take out the Hessians.

A

In the Battle of Saratoga, the British planned to cut off New England from the other colonies by planning on attacking from 3 different directions. However, only one direction actually went, which was General Burgoyne’s army marching to Albany. Burgoyne was able to recapture Fort Ticonderoga, but the Americans fought back, and Burgoyne surrendered.

Why was the Battle of Saratoga a turning point in the war?

A

The Battle of Saratoga was a turning point in the war because it “…ended the British threat to New England” and boosted spirits. It was also the reason the British stopped going into the woods (that was how they were attacked in that battle), and France became America’s ally after this battle.

A

They were able to defeat them easily because it was the morning after Christmas day, and the Hessians were all hungover and stuff after partying all Christmas. They also didn’t think the Americans would attack on a holiday.

A

He was getting old and really did not want to go into battle, and he was therefore not prepared. Instead of bringing weapons and things for war, he brought home comforts.
