What were the Intolerable Acts?

A

Four extremely harsh laws passed by Parliament as punishment for the Boston Tea Party. These acts consisted of shutting down the Boston Harbor, limiting town meetings to only once per year (when they used to be as often as the colonists wished), allowing major criminals to be tried in Britain or Canada (where there can be biased or sympathetic judges), and a new Quartering Act (where colonists had to house and feed the soldiers).

A

A meeting where delegates from all 13 colonies (all present in the first meeting except Georgia) came together to discuss pressing issues. Ex. the first Continental Congress meeting was to discuss the situation in Massachusetts.

Why did the Battle of Lexington and Concord happen?

A

A British general named Thomas Gage heard that the minutemen were storing a large supply of weapons in Concord, and they planned to invade it.

What happened in the Battle of Lexington and Concord?

A

The British sent 700 troops to Concord with the intention of a surprise attack, but the Sons of Liberty heard about their plans. The colonists formed a way of informing each other that “The redcoats are coming!” Once the British were at Lexington (a town near Concord), they were faced with an army of minutemen, who they greatly outnumbered. They were able to reach Concord and found no supply of weapons, but on their way back, they found 300 minutemen waiting for them. The colonials won that battle using their knowledge of the terrain.
