Chapter 4 Connective Tissues Flashcards
1
Q
Areolar tissue
A
- Loose connective tissue
- Scattered cells: fibroblast, adipocytes, mast cells, & macrophages
- Matrix: Ground substance: Hyaluronic acid Fibers: collagen, elastic, & reticular
- Location: directly below epithelial tissue almost always below basement membrane
- Function: blood supply to epithelium, padding
2
Q
Adipose Tissue
A
- Loose connective tissue
- Scattered cells: adipocytes, mast cells
- Matrix: Ground substance: hyaluronic acid Fibers: collagen & elastic
- Location: subcutaneous tissue & around organs
- Function: protection(padding), insulation, & energy source
3
Q
Reticular Tissue
A
- Loose connective tissue
- Scattered cells: reticular cells
- Matrix: Ground substance: hyaluronic acid Fibers: reticular
- Location: framework of lymph nodes and organs like the spleen
- Function: provide framework for the organ
4
Q
Dense Regular Tissue
A
- Dense connective tissue
- Scattered cells: fibroblasts
- Matrix: Ground substance: very little Fibers: collagen fibers
- Locations: tendons & ligaments
- Function: dense regular tissue sting yet flexible
5
Q
Dense Irregular Tissue
A
- Dense connective tissue
- Scattered cells: fibroblasts
- Matrix: Ground substance: very little Fibers: collagen
- Location: dermis, periosteum
- Function: dense irregular tissue is strong in several directions
6
Q
Elastic Connective Tissue
A
- Elastic connective tissue
- Scattered cells: fibroblasts
- Matrix: Ground substance: very little Fibers: elastic fibers
- Location: elastic arteries, true vocal cords
- Stretch & recoil
7
Q
Cartilage
A
- Has no blood vessels or nerve supply
- Scattered cells: chondrocytes located in lacunae
- Matrix: varies for each cartilage Ground substance: chondroitin sulfate & glucosamine
- Location:
a. Fibrous cartilage: meniscus, symphysispubis, intervertebral discs
b. Hyaline cartilage: embryonic skeleton, ends of long bones, trachea, nose, costal cartilage
c. Elastic cartilage: ear - Function: withstanding physical stress
8
Q
Bone Tissue
A
- Hard connective tissue arranged in osteons
- Scattered cells: osteoblasts, osteoclasts, osteocytes. Cells are located in lacunae. They connect with Haversian canal via canaliculi
- Matrix: Ground substance: inorganic calcium salts & other ionic salts Fibers: collagen & elastic fibers
- Location: compact bone
- Function: support, calcium storage & movement
9
Q
Blood
A
- Liquid connective tissue
- Scattered cells: RBC & WBC
- Matrix: Ground substance: plasma(water) Fibers: nine unless it clots
- Location: blood vessels
- Function: transport of oxygen & nutrients, carries waste from organs to be eliminated
10
Q
Lymph
A
- Liquid connective tissue
- Scattered cells: WBC
- Matrix: Ground Substance: lymph(water) Fibers: none
- Location: lymph vessels
- Function: immunity, carry away excess interstitial fluid
