Abdominal evisceration
condition where abdominal organs protrude through opening in the abdominal wall
Cullen’s sign
ecchymosis around the umbilicus, indicative of retroperitoneal hemorrage
Diaphragmatic rupture
injury from a hole or tear in the diaphragm results in opening between thoracic and abdominal cavities, where abdominal contents can enter thoracic cavity
Grey Turner’s sign
ecchymosis of the flanks, indicating retroperitoneal hemorrhaging
Involuntary guarding
uncontrollable spasm of the abdominal muscle as a result of peritonitis
Kehr’s sign
referred pain to the shoulder caused by blood irritating the diaphragm; indicative of spleen injury
Parietal peritoneum
outermost lining of the abdominal structures that adheres to the inner walls of the abdominal cavity
Peritoneal cavity
the space between the parietal and visceral peritoneum
Peritoneum
double layered membrane the lines the abdominal cavity
Retroperitoneal space
posterior division of the abdominal cavity which is separated from the rest of the abd organs by the parietal peritoneum
Visceral peritoneum
the inner layer of the peritoneal lining, that adheres to the abd organs

the tensing of the abdominal muscles by the patient in anticipation of palpitation
