Closed Fracture
break in the bone where the skin still remains intact
Comminuted fracture
where the bone is broken into multiple pieces
Dislocation
a complete displacement of bone ends from a joint
Flat bones
bones with width greater than their thickness (sternum, scapula, ribs)
Fracture
any type of break in a bone
Greenstick fracture
partial break of a bone
Impacted fracture
break in bone that decreases length of bone due to compression of bone
Long bones
bones with a greater length than diameter (femur, ulna, radius, etc)
Oblique fracture
break that runs across the bone at an angle other than 90 degrees to axis of bone
Open fracture
break in bone along with open injury to tissue over the break
Sesamoid bones
bones located within a tendon, like the patella
Short bones
bones that are not very long in relation to diameter, metacarpals, metatarsals, phalanges
Spiral fracture
break that has corkscrew pattern around bone, caused by rotational forces
Splint
any device used to immobilize a body part
Sprain
stretching or tearing of the ligaments of a joint
